The Caroliance Youth Poetry Festival is a new convergence of middle and high school students from North and South Carolina, focused on celebrating the power of their voices through poetry and creativity. Students representing those with casual interests in poetry to seasoned spoken word performers are all invited.
Caroliance is intended to reach out and include all youth with varying levels of interest in poetry, performance, and creative writing. It is recommended to register full school teams of 4-6 students to ensure that the highest number of young writers are allowed the opportunity to experience this festival. However, we fully understand that there are areas throughout both states where students may be unable to find enough classmates to form a poetry slam team. Therefore, we highly encourage those youth to register as an individual participant from their school. This will ensure that a student’s location will not interrupt their ability to attend Caroliance.
North Carolina State Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green and other poets laureate from both states will facilitate workshops, provide mentorship, and share their works. Festival participants will engage in poetry and creative writing workshops and multi-discipline arts and poetry showcases.
The main event of the festival will be a poetry slam competition involving school teams and individual poets. All competing poets will participate in a winner-take-all competition on Saturday at Goodyear Arts in Camp North End at 7PM.
